About this edition

The Book of Remembrances [Kitab al-Adhkar]
By Imam Yahya ibn Sharaf an-Nawawi

Kitab al-Adhkar is the definitive compilation of remembrances (dhikr) and supplications (du‘a) as conveyed by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the final Messenger of Allah. It provides a comprehensive guide to remembering and glorifying the Lord of the Universe, offering spiritual nourishment for every aspect of a believer’s daily life.

Dhikr and du‘a lie at the very heart of Islam, forming the essential connection between the Creator and His creation. As integral components of the Prophetic Sunna, they provide a divinely appointed means of approaching Allah for all needs, while reinforcing tawḥīd, the existential and cognitive unity that defines Muslim spirituality. The book also emphasises the importance of speaking only what is good and avoiding the sins of the tongue.

The author, Muhy al-Din Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi (631-676 AH / 123-1277 CE), devoted his entire life to the pursuit of sacred knowledge and is revered throughout the Sunni world as one of its greatest authorities. Among his most famous works are Al-Arba‘in (a collection of forty hadiths), a commentary on Sahih Muslim, and Kitab al-Adhkar.

This volume serves both as a reference guide and a source of inspiration. It provides a clear and elegant English translation of Imam al-Nawawi’s classic, including the full text of every prayer and invocation in both Arabic script and romanisation. It also incorporates all of the author’s statements about hadiths he narrated directly from his teachers, his guidance on the correct spelling and meanings of rare words and names, and scholarly notes supplementing his commentary on the sources of the hadiths.
