About this edition

The Great Scholars of the Deobandi Seminary

The Great Scholars of the Deobandi Seminary offers an inspiring glimpse into the lives and works of some of the luminaries affiliated with Dar al-Ulum Deoband, often described as the Azhar of the East. This book is a translation of two Urdu articles authored by Mufti Taqi Usmani, later published together under the title Akabir-i Deoband Kya Thay.

The first article recounts a series of profound stories, teachings, and personal interactions that Mufti Taqi Usmani’s distinguished father, Mufti Muhammad Shafi Usmani, often shared with fondness, reflecting on his teachers and elders from whom he benefited. The second article, likewise a collection of stories and sayings, highlights the defining characteristics of those who emerged from the rich tradition of the Deoband seminary.

In essence, this book captures the spirit and ethos of the Deoband seminary, offering invaluable insights into the character, legacy, and methodology of its great masters.

The author, Mufti Taqi Usmani, is one of today’s leading contemporary scholars. After studying at Dar al-Ulum Karachi, Pakistan-a renowned institute established by his late father, Mufti Shafi Usmani-he has taught at the same institution for over four decades and currently instructs in Sahih al-Bukhari. In addition to his expertise in Islamic Law, Economics, and Hadith, he has authored more than forty books in Arabic, Urdu, and English on a wide range of topics.
